Living Authentically

It has been somewhat hard to adjust to normal life after returning from my month away at yoga teacher training. Being at training I was immersed in one of my passions. Being back, I have to find a way to balance that passion with work, other hobbies and everything else life brings. This has made me start prioritizing things more and wanting to really define who I am. At the training, I felt as though I could be myself 100% of the time. At home, I realize that can change based on who I’m around or what job I am at. I am making it a goal and a priority to live my most authentic self 100% of the time.

Being authentic to me means that I know what I believe in and both my actions and words match that. I think our authentic self is constantly changing and evolving. We’re constantly revealing more of our true authentic self as we grow and learn more about ourselves.

To be authentic, we have to know what it is we believe in. I feel like when you do your research you are better able to understand and know what you believe in – and this helps you to be able to be more authentic. This can relate to things like your political beliefs or beliefs about yourself. Below are ways that I am going to learn to live more authentically.

Ways to live more authentically

Keep A Good Support System – Surround yourself with people that lift you up, encourage you to be yourself, and fully support you. This also means to stay connected with genuine friends. Practice gratitude for the ones you love showing them how much their support helps you.

Express Yourself And Speak Your Truth – Know what you believe in and own it. It’s okay if these beliefs change as you gain more information. You don’t have to be stuck in your current ways or beliefs.

Have An Open Mind And Heart – Keep an open mind and heart about yourself and others and try not to judge others. Encourage others in their self-authenticity journey, appreciating and respecting that everyone is different with different beliefs and truths.

Reflect Through Meditation – Spending time in meditation to reflect can help you look inward for the answers instead of seeking validation from others.

Listen To Your Intuition – Trust your gut. You know yourself the best, so trust yourself. This will also make it easier to notice when you’re being unauthentic. Be mindful when you do find yourself being unauthentic, and see what you can do to change that.

Positive Self-Talk – You spend the most time with yourself, so don’t let that time be negative. Talk yourself up and try not to focus on any negative feelings you have about yourself.

Don’t Define Yourself From Your Material Possessions – This is sometimes a hard one for me. I let my clothing style define me, and sometimes I rely on this too much. Your style can be a part of you, but it should not be all of you. Know who you are even if you had to wear the same thing every day.

Encourage Creativity – Expressing yourself creatively can be a great outlet and a way to learn more about yourself. This can also push yourself to think outside of the box, which can help when you want to define your values and beliefs.

Don’t Neglect Yourself – Don’t forget to take time for yourself. Do something for you every day, and try not to let other things get in the way. Take time for self-care and make it a priority.

Just Be You

Don’t be scared to be yourself. I’m proud of my beliefs and I’m proud to be my weird, unique self. It has taken time for me to feel this way and it’s a constant journey that I’m excited to be on.

Emily
